Cebu, Philippines (as I remember it)

Some of my favorite places in Cebu, after dark:

MOOON CAFE
Guadalupe, Cebu
They say you can't have it all. And even legendary hedonists, the Rolling Stones acknowledge, "you can't always get what you want."

But guests at Mooon, on Julio Diaz corner Emilio Streets in Guadalupe Cebu can come close. One of Cebu's preferred nightspots for young professionals; Mooon offers patrons carefree evenings filed with good affordable food, nice ambience, and plenty of fun.

It's a formula that has propelled Mooon to the top of the city's nightlife scene since its opening in March 1997. The same experience can be had at the new expanded Mooon, which opened in April 2000, located just a few meters from the old street-side hangout.

Theres actually nothing fancy about Mooon: ceiling fans, cool the place, there are no uniformed waiters hovering about, but the place has a lot of substance and is a lot of fun. It is very relaxing and its a nice place to meet friends and talk.

The New Mooon, a 1923 renovated Spanish house, greet guests with warm colors and an inviting ambience. Here, guests enjoy their food in a relaxed setting that doesn't jar the senses.

With three owners, thats why they added the third o in Mooon to make it unique.

Definitely, Mooon is a wonderful addition to Cebus night scene and has changed the way many locals think about going out. Well, they are only open in the evening, dinner starts at 7 pm.

ROOMFUL OF BLUES
Talamban, Cebu

Talamban on a wet Saturday night-who knows what treasures lie hidden along its deserted streets and nondescript alleyways? The locals know. And quite a few of them head for the Roomful of Blues.

Roomful of Blues, the citys first blues bar, is anything but gloomy. About the worst that can be said about it is that on most weekend nights, you might not be able to get in after 10 because the line outside can get lengthy; and if you do manage to get in, the crowds jostle and the bar stools are uncomfortable. But the experience is authentic.

RB deserves a visit for two reasons: first, here you can savor the blues lyrics which contain some of the most fantastically penetrating autobiographical and revealing statements mixed with barely concealed desire, loneliness, and tenderness-emotions which anyone can relate to. And secondly, they actually have good food. It is, after all, as much as a restaurant as it is a neighbor.

But beyond the music and the food, you visit the Roomful of Blues for its ambience and spontaneity. Although its small, the intimacy of the place gives you elbow room for yourself while conscious of the private voices within earshot, or you can snatch a sigh, and occasionally, laughter.

So if you hanker for a place with nice cold drinks, good food, and some soulful music, it is the place to be. Sad as the blues may be, theres almost always something humorous about them even if its the kind of humor that laughs to keep from crying.
